Assessment of Plasma Aldosterone Levels in Children with Sepsis

Abstract

Background: Sepsis in children poses significant diagnostic and management challenges owing to their distinct physiological traits and the nonspecific presentation of the condition. Recent studies have investigated the function of diverse biomarkers in predicting the severity and prognosis of sepsis in pediatrics.

Objective: Evaluation of aldosterone levels in children with sepsis.

Methods: It was a case-controlled study and included eighty children aged from 1 month to five years; 60 children with sepsis, and 20 child who were apparently healthy; admitted to the Pediatric Department at Minia University children hospital. All children were subjected to history taking, general examination, laboratory investigations (complete blood count; random blood glucose; C-reactive protein; electrolytes; urea; creatinine, aldosterone, cortisol, and ACTH levels).

Results: Demographic data in the form of age, gender, and residence were in-significant between both groups. vital data and laboratory investigations were significantly affected in septic children. Aldosterone and cortisol levels was increased in children with sepsis than control but this increase was non-significant, but ACTH showed significant increase in children with sepsis.

Conclusions: It is concluded that marked physiological and biochemical disturbances were found in children with sepsis, moreover, those children exhibited altered vital signs, altered laboratory data and elevated aldosterone levels
