Correlation between severity of tinnitus and degree of hearing loss

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the incidence of tinnitus with hearing loss among patients with tinnitus attending the ENT clinic in Minia governate and assess the correlation between tinnitus severity and severity of hearing loss.

Patients and Methods: 300 individuals more than 18 years in both genders, with history of chronic tinnitus and hearing abnormalities were analyzed in this prospective study that conducted at Otorhinolaryngology department, Minia University Hospital, Egypt between August 2023 to May 2024. The patients replied a questionnaire to rate seriousness of tinnitus which reviewed agreeing to the approved Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) after translation to Arabic version to be understandable with our patients.

Results: Regarding the relationship between tinnitus severity and degree of hearing loss, we found that a exceedingly critical positive relationship between them as increasing tinnitus severity related with increased degree of hearing loss (as P-value <0.001).

Conclusion: Our findings highlighted that there was a strong positive correlation between the severity of tinnitus and hearing loss.
